Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

Hi all :hello:
got a few more relics from the mud..
I can't identify the cap pin, I found a pre 1925 Eagle Globe and Anchor pin in the same area previously, can anyone ID this for me :icon_scratch:
Penny size flat button shown for reference.
Round Pewter mirror frame,(in three pieces), a couple spoons & 45-70 slugs.
Pewter tankard handle,
Pewter saucer, Buddha & stork, he's throwing or catching something, can't tell what it is, on the bottom is a landscape and fireworks in the sky.
A twice shot lock, definitely not a Master :laughing9:
HH all! Thanks for looking

Great hunt Herbie 8) 8) :icon_scratch: cap insignia is possibly Fourth Heavy Artillery Regiment , Company M , from NY State . The crossed cannons was adopted by the US government for use as the insignia for its artillery in 1836. During the year of 1858, artillery enlisted men began to wear the insignia on their caps. Their company letter was to be placed below the brass pin. The one you dug has no brass pin , soo :icon_scratch: must be post war . This insignia is still in use today.
 maybe the Budda is throwing out good luck  :icon_sunny: dawg

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

I am guessing that with the screw-type attachment device, the crossed cannons are WWI or later. Nice grouping of goodies!

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

I was thinking it was post-1902 era because of the method of attachment.

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

Very cool stuff. The crossed cannons are very sweet indeed!

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

some nice stuff,Really like those spoons

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

Thanks All,
Though all CW Badges I see use wire back attachments, I can find little reference to
4th Artillery after 1865 :icon_scratch:
Here's a screw back pin from Indian Wars 1870s

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

That's a Terrific Crossed Cannons Insignia Badge buddy, Congrats! It probably dates to the late 1800s-early 1900s but would be a VERY welcome piece in my collection. Awesome find my friend :icon_thumleft:

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

Good to hear from everyone..
The Cannons badge was a surface find :laughing7:
I've dug lots of those spoons with the geometric patterns,
never could read the makers mark until I dug another yesterday,
They are 'Sheffields', odd how the front detail remains on most,
but the makers were unreadable :dontknow:
HH all! Headed into the ghost town at first light for some coins!

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

thanks Mike,
The items I find setting on the surface amaze me, this one held up good, it was face down, the upper side always degrades faster.
HH to you!
I saw your article in the Minelab 'Success Stories' folder, good stuff! :o
Congrats :hello2:

Re: Cap Pin: '4 M' Crossed Cannons

Wow what a great bunch of finds. The mirror frame is cool.

It could be a Lotus flower that is hovering above the Buddha's hand :dontknow:

Thanks Bob & rtde3,
great tip on the flower, I know the lotus held a special significance with Bhuddist stuff, these oriental deco items were popular in the last part of the 19th century.
Great Digs All
