Is this part of a carbine sling buckle? Or maybe sash buckle?

I agree! Due to it's size, it may be a piece of buckle from a leather strap used on a storage box on a wagon or a strap used on a horse to pull a wagon (horse tack).

Its 3.25 inches long not wide which matches the dimensions of a carbine sling civil war buckle

Well in the pic it sure appears wider than longer! Am I missing something?
