Careful what you dig and carry.

This actually happened a few months ago for me but Ill share it since it technically could happen to anyone and cause problems.

I was hunting on a military installation, on the beach actually.

As usual, any trash I either dig up, or come across while Md'ing I pick up and throw out at the end of the day in one of the barrels. If it's beer cans, pop cans, etc i take em home and recycle them, aluminum is worth a decent amount around here. If it's other stuff, i dump it.

Anyways, I found a cigarette box half buried in the sand, so picked it up and shoved it into my apron in the trash half. One of the base police who happened to be on the beach, was there at the time, and we began talking. I explained to him how my detector works, what kind of stuff I find on the beaches, or well anywhere, and just chatting, and showing him the detector etc. I also explain to him that even though I know something is trash, Ill dig it anyways so I can throw it away and clean up the beach. Very shortly after I said this, I got a signal, and removed the earphones from the detector. I told him, hear this, hear how it's breaking up and has 'loud spots'... that means it's trash,Ill call it either tin foil or a rotten can. Did a pinpoint and then said, this ones probably about a foot down. At which point I dug it up and sure nuff, pulled out a can... half... ish... almost....

anyways.....

about 15 - 20 minutes later, its getting towards dark and time for me to leave, so we both walk to the parking lot, still talking and hit the garbage can. Here's where I say, ok let me get rid of the junk i pulled up. I grabbed the cigarette box and threw it at the trash can. Ok, NOW we know why I am metal detecting and not playing professional basketball, I missed very badly, the thing bounced off the side of the garbage can opened up and as it hit the ground, the contents of it did as well and it was a joint.

I stopped dead in my tracks, he got quiet. I said, umm.. he walked over picked it up, busted it open smelled it, looked at me and said, well somebody has been partying.

I then say, oh come on, you seen me pick it up, you KNOW it's not mine, ill pee in a bottle right now to prove it is not me. I was getting worried. He laughed and said oh dont' worry, I know it's not yours. Called a supervisor, who showed about 20 minutes later, they talked, and well.. that was about it.

Thing is.. what if he was NOT there and did NOT see me pick it up. What if for some reason they asked me hey, what's in the bag? I show them, and they find it then??

Just by picking up trash, this could have potentially turned into a very bad situation. Being military could have double #$%^$% ed me, but even on a regular beach, yah the cops could have a lot of fun with you if they choose to.

Bottom line, if you are picking up trash, that's a good and honorable thing to do, but be very careful to know exactly what it is that you are picking up, and if you happen to grab any 'containers' of any sorts... open them up to see what's in them first before you pocket them, because once you grab em, store em... for the purposes of the law... they are yours...

I would have been petrified! When I was a teenager a friend of mine was walking down the street and picked up a box of cigarettes to see if there were any inside and guess what he found? A dime bag. He wasn't military tho, he just tucked it away and scurried to the safety of his room as fast as he could. :D

I found a homemade pot pipe a few years back. I wanted to keep it because a lot of work was put into it and it was neat. It was made out of bronze. I threw it in the trash. I did not want to take the chance. Also, one time when my cousin and I went to Florida to visit our Grandparents I rented a car. 4 days into the vacation my cousin opened the glove box and there was a bag of crack. We did not want to throw it out of the car in case some one saw it so we drove to the police station, which was also a risk. Check your rentals too!

Cigarette boxes are good hiding places for stuff because on the outside, it looks like just a box of cigs, and so many folks smoke that they dont give it a second glance. I know some cid heads who keep their hits in the cellophane between the box and outside. I know others who keep their stash in medicine bottles or asprin bottles. Funny part is, they think they are being so slick but those are the first places the cops look if they are suspicious of you.

Even if I did have a bad run in, im pretty sure id't be straightened up but just the hastle of going through all of that, being a federal offense and all... no thanks id rather not have to deal with it.

Heck worse case scenario, I could always plea that I was helping rid their community of illegal drugs ;D

Take care

:D Great story and happy ending! Always check the cig paks you find. Bathers at the beaches will put money, rings and what ever else they don't want to lose in them, then for some reason or other they get left behind. I have found a lot of interesting things in those little paks. HH

Also make sure and check those cig boxes because not too long ago I picked one up on a playground to toss in the rash and just for grins opened it up. Someone had stuffed 5 one dollar bills between the liner and the outside of the box.

Glad this story worked out for you in the end.

Years ago, my brother and I were in Tiajuana having his VW van upholstered and body work done.

Several days later we came back across the border crossing with about 500# of extra bondo and the smell was horrible...

long story short, we were sent to the Fed-Shed for further inspection with both mirrors and dogs...clean bill of heath...

Several weeks later my brother had disassembled a combination refrigerator / stove so he could make the necessary connections and found a kilo of grass under the stove...

The combo was purchased from a pick-yur-part lot and was in the VW when we were in Mexico...

By the way, the grass was so old that it was almost mulch...damn

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...wonder where he put that?

I always check cigarette boxes, especially at the beach, because very often people will stick some cash in them so they don't have to carry a wallet. I remember being down in San Juan, Puerto Rico several years ago. Family trip with my inlaws, and they were harassing me about bringing my detector (throwing coins in front of me - kinda funny actually - I made an extra $2.50). Anyway, I found an empty pack of smokes, opened it up, and inside was a $100 bill. I played it at the casino later that night and made over $1500.
