Hi. I have a carriage lantern that has a name H. Clark on it. I have researched this for quite a while now. I think the H. Clark was the client who bought it for their carriage. It is heavy and all brass. Very cool but I cannot figure out the worth of it. I refuse to get rid of it. I do not know why.:tongue3:

Anybody know anything about carriage lanterns?

It is interesting that this lamp has only one lens so the light is focused in a single direction. Most carriage lamps were both front and side lamps (two lenses).

It also seems small for a carriage lamp.

Seeing that it is designed to put out such a small amount of light and it is mostly metal I,m begining to think it was primarily a heater/hand warmer. I have seen others some what like that. This has a kinda new look to it.

I believe it was made in India 50-60 years ago. Hence the lack of manufacturers marks on any part of it. Just my opinion.

I contacted a museum in New England and the associate curator got a hold of me. She agrees that it is a carriage lamp. She thinks it is from the 1830's or earlier! Wowza! She gave me some places to look up and suggested that I look up businesses from the 1830's and earlier in Trenton, New Jersey as she thinks the lamp is from there! I am excited!!!
