carved butt plate

Is this a butt plate for a rifle? It is much thinner than any I've found thus far. If so any ID and time range?

Also, I believe it is carved. Can anyone make that out?

Looks like one that has been made into something else, maybe a scraper if it has a sharper edge on the sides...d2

Yep, a buttplate and it appears that someone scratched their initials into it. The second letter looks like a "B". First possibly a "T" ?

I've heard tales that the American Indian has been known to remove butt plates to be used as hide scrapers.

None. there are and were so many different dimensions and variations.

That's a pretty cool one, the style of the engraving makes me think maybe early 1800's ish. Id-ing any more than that is going to be nearly impossible though
