Went digging on Saturday to an old Confederate camp and dug this US buckle. It appears a soldier carved on it and made the U into a J......I first thought it was just deteriorated but the ground it came from is really good to relics and I can see marks on it where it has been carved with some kind of tool....? I also found this hat letter P....

Congrats on the save.
The buckle is just looks like good old dog eared deterioration to these eyes.
Not getting the U into a J
Here is a similar buckle picture that shows the U fully

The buckle has been carved on as the marks can be seen on it but it is what it isā€¦Iā€™ve been relic hunting for over 40+ years and have lost count on how many US plates I have dug in that time, I definitely know what it is supposed to look likeā€¦lol

Those letters on the back are from the Mfg. of the plate...W.H. Smith - Brooklyn
I have found numerous plates with that back mark stamped on them; they made a lot of the plates for the Union Army.

Congrats for recovering so many that you lost count.

I must be totally daft as I still don't see what you are seeing.
The part about being carved into a J.
Is there any way you can circle, enhance that for these eyes?
Thanks
