I checked with a fellow who wrote an article in the American Numismatic Association's monthly publication, The Numismatist, about the Heeren Brothers company. He had not seen this particular medal. We agreed that the rod with snakes the figure is holding (either a Caduceus or a Rod of Asclepius) was probably symbolic of medicine, and from that he suggested that the piece may have been struck on the occasion of the opening (1 March 1910) of the hospital in Pittsburgh that is now known as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside Hospital. http://shadyside.upmc.com/ Too bad the designers didn't think that somebody in the future would be interested in knowing for sure which building they were talking about...
