I was finally able to get my daughter to show me how to resize the photos. Sorry it took so long.
I have late 1700's to early 1800's cellar holes behind my house, including a 1 room school house.
Finds...
wagon wheel hub
square head nail
ox shoe
bullet cases...obviously later hunting
and a snail shell I'm guessing it's not a sea shell seeing as how the ocean is hours away from the school house. It was in a pile of bricks from the school's chimney.

Sarah
Hope I got the size right!

Hey search.

Every time I find a site that has those small shells I find something good...looks like you have a good site so hit it hard and slow and you will come out with the goodies.. H.H. TnT..

Nice finds. I would go slow and cover every inch. There should be a lot more finds there. It sounds like a very promising site.

Nice relic finds. It's pretty cool that you have these old sites to hunt pretty much right out your own back door.Keep up the great work.Best of luck to you and HH!

cool deal - sounds like a good place,

HH

Hit it hard Search! I see large cents, old coppers, bust coinage in your future! Maybe a Chain cent!!! Good luck and let us know. HH Coinman66

Sounds like you really have a great site to hunt. If you have the cellar holee and old school you are bound to be able to dig some really good stuff. Is there an old dump near by ? Find out where the people who lived there and from the school dumped their bottles etc. Will be in pretty close proximity to the dwellings. Would love to see some pics of the site. How old is the school that you are talking about? Any history on it?
Cant wait to see what else you dig up here....it all sounds very promising.

The map I have of the cellar hole and school is taken from 1850 census.
Unfortunately we are expecting 3-6 inches of snow and the ground is now completely frozen. I'll research more of my town and I hope to get in touch with the Historical Society to see if they would be interrested in items that I find in exchange for helping me to get onto the private property. The roads are public but I don't want to tick anyone off.
Thanks for the encouraging words.
HH to those of you in warmer climates!

Thanks S&F....it is alot warmer here than where you are for sure! ;)
Can't wait to see what you find there. I am so excited for you!!

How deep was the snail and what did it read on your MD?? ;D

Happy Hunting,

What is a chain cent? Probably a stupid question but I have never heard that.

Sounds like an awesome site to detect, good luck! Dig those faint weak signals. HH, Mike

How lucky lucky lucky you are to have such a great area so close to you to poke about!!! ;D I am envious but more eager to see all that you find!!!

That shell. . . hhmmm. . when we resided down in Ft Myers Florida there was a train track behind our house, & on both side of the tracks there were these "fire trails". . one spot we find oodles & I mean OODLES of snail shells similar to yours. . people round there had called them "Apple Snails" ;D . . they were really HUGE for snail shells, I got to say!

Again I am sooooo looking forward to reading many many more entries from you! ;D

Bogart :D
