So last night I went to s local auction house.
They had all nine of these containers full of pennies. I picked one up and i estimated it weighed ten lbs or alil under. I know from crhing that there are roughly 147 pennies per pound so if all nine had around 10lbs there was roughly 115-$130.00 there.
Well I won the auction for the steep price of 35.00. When I got home and weighed them sure enough they where 80lbs of pennies in all.
After diving into the first can I pulled 15 wheats.
So I basically am going to get paid 70.00 to coin hunt for the next hours.

Sounds like you got 80lbs of cents for about 1/3 of fv. That was a great deal. Congrats!

awesome. way to look at a situation differently and find the opportunity others missed. good luck!!!

just keep stacking, just keep stacking, stacking stacking stacking

now that's how its done, let us know how you do!

That's really cool. Amazing that no one bid higher! Even just throwing it in Coinstar you'd make a good chunk 'o cash. Hope you find something really grand in there.

Wow thats a great score, hope you find some goodies... oh boy I couldnt imagine the time it takes to search 80lb of cents... lol

So I just got done dumping.
Total wheats was
149
Total money
Was......
$108.60 or a 73.00 profit pretty good just for knowing how much pennies are a lb

You can almost always profit from others' laziness. Nice score.

CRH'ing is about getting silver (or whatever keepers) at face value. You, sir, seem to have beat the system by getting them for less than face value. That doesn't happen all that often. Nice score.

Were you told before the auction that all the pennies were copper?

147 pennies make a pound only if they are all copper. If zinc are mixed in then it takes many more pennies to make a pound.

For example, here in N.Y.C. I average about 28% copper, so lets use 25% for a little bit of an ooops factor.

1 pound = 453.59237 grams. 1 zinc penny weighs 2.5 grams. 1 copper penny weighs 3.1 grams.

With a 75% zinc/25% copper mix there would be 340.19 grams of zinc/2.5 each = approx. 136 zinc pennies.

There would also be 113.398 grams of copper/3.1 each = approx. 37 copper pennies.

Here in NYC it would be 173 give or take unless I was told that they were all copper or all zinc.

I looked they where a mix of zincolns and copper.
I just did147 for the worst case scenario so I wouldnt get burned.
All wheats where 40s and 50s.
Only coin to speak of was a nice 1919 with luster

Just goes to show you that a little knowledge goes a long way. Years ago I bought a bucket of wheat pennies at a flea market for $25. It ended up having 3778 coins in there. One of my better scores but nothing like yours. Congrats!

Now that's thinking outside of the box! Congrats.
