The Safari is really pulling new targets from my old sites!
No good coins or buttons, but a few relics.
I missed the Chinese Silver Dragon coin by a couple years (found the dragonless version a while back)
Well, this piece makes up for it, a Fearsome whiskered Dragon in heavy brass.
assume its a cover to a box, snuffbox? no signs of a hinge.
Love this just as black as it is, no cleaning for this.
Another example of the variability of brass finds from that salt mud,
Some come shiny as a new nickle, others like this, with just a hint of color showing.
maybe alloy differences account for this.
A couple spoons, one handstamped (Doubled Die Error too :laughing7: )
'Sparhawk', certainly from someones 'Yacht Silver' set , foo foo
I think this is the first 'CRogersbros' mark I've seen, lots of rogers flatware dug,
all plate, never saw the C, it's usually preceded by a date.
another huge handline weight, there was a comment on the last one suggesting sounding weight, but no hollow in base, and too small.
I was given a large box of these old weights by an elderly friend, they were his grandfathers, who would set out half a dozen handlines for cod from his handmade dory after rowing out to the Isles of Shoals. a 12 mile round trip :o

Lastly, we have a serious whatsit mechanism.
Turn the round spiral cam, and the two bell shaped pieces extend and retract,
(or vice versa). wondering if anyone knows what this item was used for? :help:
It took some careful cleaning and lubrication to work it free, but am happy to have it functioning again.
Oh, I almost forgot the 21 mm blank copper,
I think it's my first half cent find :'(
Including a pic of the Evans Mass Half Cent restrike for 'comparison'
(couldn't help myself, it is a beautiful and fairly scarce piece I recently aquired) ::)
thanks for looking! Best digs to everyone

Really love the dragon!!

Congrats on an amazing fun day!!

Never found one quite like that, but the dragon is common in the Orient.
Could it be the top to a cigarette case? I have found two similar, but none that nice.
Great finds.

wow that dragon lid is cool. :icon_thumleft:

Nice finds.

Are you going to run the "what is it" on the WII forum? very curious

Thanks All!
Sending that item over to 'whatisit'
Nola_Ken,
Great start with the bookclasp idea

Very interesting finds as always Herbie!

How come my "junk" never looks as good as your "junk"! :laughing7:

Love the scripting on this old spoon! :notworthy:

I was thinking your "Whatsit" might have been from a piece of furniture . . . possibly a secret compartment release? :icon_scratch: Sorry buddy, that's all I've got! :laughing7:

Great thought Dave!
I put it over on whatsit, it is an intrigueing piece.
I think I just got lucky finding some sites where people threw their trash for a long time.
Best to you

Sweet finds as usual Steel! :icon_thumright: The box top has very nice detail to it, wonder if the rest is there...

Great finds, love the box top,any idea how old it is? :icon_sunny:
Thanks guys!
I'd guess age at 1880-1900.
I believe the box was wood with this lift off cover.
Best digs to all

If that was a cigarette case top, then the bottom was probably of the same metal, maybe similar picture, maybe plain.
That top gets better looking, everytime I see it. A nice piece for any collection.

Herbie,
That Chinese dragon box cover is awesome!
That Roger's family must have been very wealthy. They sure turned out a lot of flatware. That's about the only brand I ever seem to dig.
Nice finds. :hello2:

Thanks Doug!
I gotta get all my Rogers out and count the variations, 3 that I know of have dates,
1847, 1861, & 1881 I believe, then there are initials, brothers, bros, & co, etc.
They all appear to have been produced by International Silver.
I have an 'Acanthus' pattern spoon in sterling, listed as rogers on this site, but marked as 'IS sterling'
http://www.replacements.com/silver/manu/r.htm
I don't know if they ever put out ANY sterling marked Rogers

Thanks Hikeinmts!
This piece was found next to the NH militia button pit, an area littered with large pieces of iron and trash, I probably scanned over this many times and got an overload signal, it was just under the surface.\
When I return to this site, I'll certainly put extra effort into finding the box, thanks to your tip.
Best to you!

Nice Hunt !!!! :icon_thumright:
