Any of you Okies or Kansas folks know where these places are in your states?

The federal Bureau of Land Management, the legal custodian of the wild horses and burros, recently proposed euthanization to deal with the over population of wild horses.

For years, the bureau has been running the Adopt-A-Horse program, selling mustangs from the range to those who would care for them. But 30,000 once-wild horses were never adopted and are being boarded by the agency at facilities in Kansas and Oklahoma

any ideas of locations? I haven't found them yet

Never heard of any place like that in Kansas BEF.

BEF,

A friend of mine near Lexington, TX adopted 2 burros from the BLM. She kinda got me interested in it. I had searched around & found a site where the horses/burros were hauled to different areas of the country...the closest to me was Jackson, MS. I will search again to see if I can find it for you. No, I never got to adopt, this was 3 years ago, I'm not sure if they're still doing this.

Found the site...the adoption schedule is at the bottom of the page. http://www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/prog/wild_horse_and_burro/adoption_of_wild_horses/how_to_adopt.html

 RR

Yes they do ship them all over and it kinda like adopting a kid, they have or suppose to come look at your place, make sure you have shelter for them (corral) plenty of land for them to graze on, etc. To make sure the critter will be well taken care of and qualify you before you can buy one at auction ,etc. Once you have one they are suppose to make checks to ensure the above also.

I have been to several auctions the closest to me is Auburn Alabama at the college they auction them off yearly there. I hate to say this as it sounds like I am picky but there is a certain wild mustang I am after or prefer. The Kiger line,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiger_Mustang

They are from Oregon and I have been on their lottery for 6 years now. Might be 7 years, still I haven't had my ticket pulled. Which has always been in my plans if drawn mean me driving to Oregon and picking one or two up.

I read back some as the link I posted where they are thinking of putting down some as they have many many awaiting adoption. I figured if they are close to Caldwell I might just swing that way after the hunt and see what is there and if I can talk them into me taking 2-4 off their hands. I would just pull my trailer with me and take my truck.

Now if you have calves or young horses, a few burros or donkeys are the best coyote protection you can get. They will charge and kill them if they see them. So far they have not made it into Central Florida yet that I am aware of

Thanks

Hi boys and girls and Mr. Burdette I have been away from the computer for a few days and was just wondering if the hunt was still on since you guys sold Stan's house? I was just thinking,( dang , don't hold that against me), that if we all get up to Caldwell at one ltime we will have more people than the entire population. Isn't there only about 150 people in Caldwell if you count the chickens? We can take over the town like Marlin Brando did in that old motorcycle gang movie. Warsaw Daddy can be the Marlin Brando guy and get all the chicks and I think that will make him happy, except of course, what's he going to do with them if he gets them? Stoney and Evie can put up signs and sell the rest of the town and we can split the $$$. Let's see that will be about $1.17 each, making the trip really pay off. Well, about a doller seventeen is what I have been averaging on my hunts so far this year so that's big money to me! Who knows , we might even get $1.23 each if we invite T.Boon Pickens, 'cause he has a plan. Wait, no, I wasn't thinking, I was having a bad dream. Won't someone wake me up.... please? No? Oh what the heck, I'm going back to my nap.

I learned something today. I didn't know they had a program here for the horses. I do know they have Buffalo to sell yearly.

I haven't been up to speed on the mustang/burro auctions for a few yrs now, but, they use to have a 'showing',not a auction, where you could come and purchase one of your choice.I think the burro's were $50 and the mustangs were$100.They would show them sometimes for one day and sometimes for two days.I remember a couple of sales in the KC area.

This is just a pic I found on the WWW, I thought it was pretty to use on the daily countdown. Burdie has so many logos he is going to have a time choosing just one for a shirt or whatever. So far I believe they've all been posted here one time or another.

Oh, sorry Nana I forgot you are one of those high maintenance dames! :icon_queen: Maybe we can all contribute a few pennies and support you in the manner to which you have become accustomed? M  nty

P.S. Without going back through all this fabulous literature, what is the hunt schedule? Is Friday the 10th kinda' a registration and get settled in day like last year, and the main hunt is on the morning of the 11th? How about the 12th? Are we hunting two days and turn out the lights the evening of the 12th? The reason I ask is I have a conflicting date with my wife's schedule and I am trying to figure out how I can come and not miss anything. I told her I'm comming up to Caldwell on the night of the 9th or early morning the 10th depending on what's going on on the 10th. Make sense? Inquiring minds want to know. M :tard: nty
