I found this a few years ago in my yard in east central ohio. It's approximately 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1 inches. It rings up as aluminum on my detector. Very hard as no little bits of metal came off as I cleaned it with a steel brush on my dremmel. It weighs 54.8 grams. I hope to soon get it to a local metalergist. Any ideas?

Is it attracted to a magnet?

After dremmel brush cleaning it sure looks like either magnesite or chromite.

If it is very highly magnetic then is would magnetite.

If little to no magnetic property then probably chromite.

Many industries use chrome, and someone around rail cars or at work may have wanted a specimen of the chrome mineral.
