FRACKVILLE — The sun isn’t the only thing shining in the sky over Frackville.
The dome sitting atop St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church is being gilded in 22 carat gold leaf, making it shine like new.
Richard Laske, of R. Laske Ecclesiastical Painting and Design, Clarks Summit, began the project last week and should be finished by the end of this week.
A lift with a large basket transports Laske high into the sky to get him close enough to his work. He uses little sheets, a few inches square, of pure gold that he applies to a varnish-like substance that he pre-paints onto the dome. “One book of 25 sheets covers about one to one-and-one-half feet,” Laske said. “It used to be like sticking up dollar bills. Now, with the price of gold, it is like sticking up $2 bills.”
