Cibola or Vaquero to buy.. UPDATE

Re: Cibola or Vaquero to buy.. MGB or none??

I think there are some misconceptions about manual ground balance. There is no "keeping it ground balanced" generally you set it at the site you are searching and that is it. I do occasionally recheck it but almost never have to rebalance at the same site. You can duplicate preset by setting your ground balance so that it is somewhat in the middle of the adjustment range and leaving it alone. By doing this you lose the ability to fine tune it though. I am not anti preset at all, I have been thinking about getting a Cibola myself to go along with my Tejon but the adjustable ground balance always has an edge over preset.

You are absolutely right. You must ground balance on every site. My area is a little different. I have made a habit of checking GB every 15-20 minutes. Some sites I never have to adjust it and other sites I have to GB every 30 feet or so. This is no problem and takes only seconds to do. Anyone that has a problem GBing a vaquero either doesn't know what they're doing or has a faulty machine. The GB is easy, more so than trying to decide what to dig and what not to dig. :D

I think I was posting at the same time you were. :D

This very thought has gone through my mind more than once.

That machine is on my list.

If you can't learn to ground balance, go with a Cibola; if you want maximum debth go with the V. Its a simple decision. If you are in ground that requires constant ground balancing a pre set will be off most of the time.

Ya . But get the Lobo Super Trac and you do not have to worry if you are ground balanced or not for you will always be ground balanced........

Re: Cibola or Vaquero to buy.. MGB or none??

I have had Lobo ST's, they were designed as a gold detector, the disc mode has a pre set ground balance just like the Cibola, the ground tracking only work in all metal. IMO the disc. mode is not as hot as it is in the Vaquero.

Re: Cibola or Vaquero to buy.. MGB or none??

Get the Vaquero and if you dont want to fuss with the ground balance control just leave it set somewhere around the middle. It is there if you need it.

Both detectors cost the same price so go for the extra control.

Hello Willee,

Thanks for the advice. Well, actually the Vaquero is around a $100 more around these here parts, and I just ordered it and it should be here tomorrow, or by Monday the latest. Can't wait.

Will give my first experiences with it on this thread.

Thanks Randy.. Good to know I have support. I told a few friends about the MD arriving and they all have old ancestral land they are offering to search. (I see shadow boxes in my future.) Also, one of their wives lost a ring and I'm already booked to hunt for it, I've been told. They have already planned picnics around the hunt. Apparently, they think this is a spectator sport..;) No MD has been in these parts, so all options are open, but I see a lot of rusty iron in my future...Goldnow

If you are unable, or you think its a pain to GB a detector, buy a Vaq, & set the GB knob near the center and leave it. Then you will be a little out of bal most of the time, just like a you are with a Cibola, but it will still work ok. You can check the GB on a Cibola by holding the pin point button down and" raising and lowering the coil. Same as checking the GB on a Vaq. A Cibola can also be GBed By opening it up and adjusting ths gb pot.

My question today about the V is, How do you tell depth with the single tone, if at all?

In my experience with analog detectors when it comes to depth is this if you are coin shooting for coin sized objects. WHen I get a good signal, before I dug, I would raise the coil over the signal swinging back and forth until it faded out. If it was about 3-4 inches above the ground before it stopped getting a signal then I would dig and alot of times it would be about 4 inches down in the ground with quarter sized objects. If it faded out about 2 inches alot of time it would be a penny or dime about 4-6 inches down. If she just kept on blarring out a solid signal about 1-1/2 to 2 foot of the ground I would not dig because it was a beer can or a piece of tin roof or something. That is just my opinion, and you can try that if you wish to see how it does for you, Tim
