Civil war ammunition box questions

a good friend has this ammo box he says is from the civil war period that he wants to sell and offered it to me.i have never seen one in person and i am almost certain its the real thing. did it hold ammo or even a large caliper machine gun? he got it from a estate sale in nj.do they have any value? thanks for any insight.

Any value? Steamer trunks can go for quite a lot of money, and they aren't all that rare. I've never seen one of those before. And yours looks a might better than the one that Digg posted, so I would guess there is considerable value there!
