I dug this up in Memphis, TN:

SharpsCarbine.webp

I believe that this is a Sharps Carbine, M&M 205, but I'd appreciate it if one of you experts could help me ID it for sure. It's the first bullet I've found.

Thanks!

I didn't feel like looking it up, but I think you're right on with the Sharps.

Burt

Thanks... and can you recommend a good reference book for this sort of thing that isn't out of print?

Check out:
A Handbook of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges
by James E. Thomas and Dean S. Thomas

Its the only ID CW bullet book I know of still in print. I don't have a copy of this one, but I've hear its good.

Quix Ten - I'm not a bullet guy, but if you post this in the What Is It forum here on TreasureNet - some smart fella like CharlieP or Monty will tell you what you have!

Welcome to TreasureNet and good luck with your find... it's a nice piece!

I think the best source is Civil War Projectiles II, Small Arms & Field Artillery. It can be had for $40 from civilwar outpost.com.
Hello to everyone here by the way. Newbie here (to the site that is).

Definitely Sharps
