Civil war campaign medal

Had a few hours today so I decided to check out a spot I recently discovered via Google earth. Old farm land with lots of old stone walls leading down to a large pond. Made my way down to the water and found a small shoreline. Started poking around and got a nice high tone. Pulled a couple of wheats out and continued my hunt. Swept over the edge of the water and got another nice high tone. Depth was super shallow so I decided to look before I dug and sure enough there it was under some debris on the shore. Thought it was a coin at first but upon a closer inspection it turned out to be something I was not expecting. Got home as quick as I could and did a little clean up with some warm peroxide. Slowly the words Horatio A Palmer Co D 47 Mass Vols New Bedford Mass became visible. Flip side has Abe Lincoln on it with the words Abraham Lincoln President US War of 1861 on it. Checked the name out on the soldiers and sailers database and there he was. Mass 47 mustered in Boxford MA in 1862, made their way to Louisiana where they served until they returned home and mustered out of service in Sept of 1863. Hoping to find some living relatives of Mr. Horatio Palmer, so I can return the medal to them. Keep your fingers crossed, I'll keep you posted.

That's a really incredible find! It's so personal, which isn't something we experience very often. We can find a coin, a buckle, bullets etc and they are general finds, with no real provenance. Your find, however, is wonderful. You deserve a pat on the back for researching the family to return the item. Kudos to you and I wish you the best of luck!!
