This artifact is sheet brass with a moon, a “4”, a large star and a series of smaller stars in the field. It was found in Pulaski, TN in a site that has produced relics from the Civil War. I have seen Civil War insignia that is similar, but it also resembles early Klan uniforms. They were founded in Pulaski. It appears to have been partially torn. Any help on age, date, use would be appreciated.

I wouldn’t think it’s a suspender buckle. That would make the “4” upside down.

Thoughts on what the image represents?

That is the man in the moon .. the 4 is his nose.
Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't seeing a '4' either.

As far as the imagery goes... Victorians were crazy about symbolism. If you do a search on Victorian crescent or Victorian "Man in the Moon" you'll see all kinds of things using the motif.

If I had to guess about the era of this item, I'd say 1890's give or take a decade.
