Re: Civil war era button

I'm not a button expert but I believe it is a Great Seal button which began being used around 1902. I found a cuff button a few months back. Again I'm no expert so I could be way off....I hope it is Civil War era.

Re: Civil war era button

Seems this version of the "Great Seal" emblem came out around 1902 and was a US military button, although the dates differed greatly, { 1902 thru WWII }. Each manufacturer's stamp seems to differ very slightly.. I have seen about 6 different buttons like this in the last hour of this seal and some are almost exact matches but in looking very closely there are very subtle differences in the detail. I will have to try and get the name off the back. { It's loaded with crust }. If I can get the name on the back I could probably date it much easier. Here is a link to some more info I just found

Sometimes you can narrow the date down a little more if you can read the manufacturer's name on the back. I found one made by "City Button Works" while the company was still in New York City. That fact told me the button was manufactured between 1907 and 1923 because that's when the company was there before moving to New Jersey.

What's the best way to get the crust off the back?? Soak in olive oil??
