100_9702.webp100_9703.webp I found this YEARS ago while surveying a piece of land along the banks of the Cape Fear river . I can not tell if the top is old ink OR old fire soot on it . Anyone have a clue ?:icon_scratch:

I believe that is "stoneware Majolica".

Salt glaze majolica even.

It was probably a decanter for their favorite drink. Is that a steam engine in the background?

Yes it is a steam engine . It is a 1932 (I think) cast iron base . Has a steam whistle also . About 14 or 15 inches tall works and sounds great . Thanks for noticing !

I agree with AARC, this is a 'Salt Glazed' Arts & Crafts Period Vase.
I think this is more likely meant to be decorative then functional, probably dating from the 1890s - early 1900s.

"The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that began in Britain and flourished in Europe and America between about 1880 and 1920, emerging in Japan in the 1920s as the Mingei movement."

Looks like a nice one. Antique engines are my other hobby.
