I posted this in today's finds as well. Found this Pin in a skirmish area. Found several shot bullets and a big chunk of an artillery shell. The pin has a small eagle sitting over what looks like a cartridge box. The left portion of the wreath is missing. Any help with an ID? Thanks! Harmonica reed, Date anywhere from civil war period to 1950's. Seems they're all the same

May we see a picture of the back of the pin along with a coin to reference size?

Thx

Here's a picture of the back, it's stamped brass.

The was a pure Civil War site, not far from a major battlefield (but on private land). We were in the confederates position.

I can't see any fasteners on the back. If it's a hat badge I would expect to see several solder marks for the loops or wires used to attach it to the hat.

Is it stamped brass? Very thin? Possibly a patriotic pin?

Was the camp used throughout the war? Early? Late?

Often both armies would use the same camp sites - just not at the same time... :laughing7: So it could be a Federal relic.

I've been looking at the center object as a book of some sort... Bible perhaps?
or am I just plain wrong?

I think it's a shield.

While looking at hat badges I noticed the shield, wreath, and eagle are a common motif for military school emblems.

Still not much to go on...

DCMatt, the pin is stamped brass, not real thin, fairly substantial. This was definitely a skirmish site, not a camp. Lots of signs of a fight, shot bullets, chunks of blown artillery shells. Haven't found any dropped bullets, all fired and all union, so I'm assuming they were firing at the confederates. Could very well be some type of patriotic pin.

Ok, I agree, not a book. The bottom corners are too rounded, but I'd otherwise thought it had the curvature of an open book.
Do you suppose there's any use in trying the flour trick, sprinkling it on and wiping it off, sometimes revealing a bit more detail (on the shield hopefully)? Or a pencil rubbing?

Unfortunately there's no indication of any other details, what you see is pretty much it. I appreciate the thoughts and comments, it was worth a shot. Unfortunately it'll most likely always be one of those mystery items.
