\I have been detecting for a little over a year now and have found my share of finds here and there. I am wanting to go civil war hunting and have know idea where to go that might be good hunting. Most of my finds have home out of montgomery county in Texas, just outside of houston. I would like to make a trip not to far and really do some good hunting. Although I have found a few military buttons, a military payroll seal tag, late 1800's derringer pistol. I have covered alot of grounds to find what I have and have not found alot in any one place. Any help on battle field hunting or where to go is appreciated.

thanks,

Darla :D

The only civil war stuff I have found has been in and around the Houston area. We check out the construction sites after they are bulldozed to remove the 1st few inches of modern trash off the top. I hear there are some places to go in Galveston but only when the tide is right I guess. We have managed to find bullets and some buttons, but like you said, not a lot in one area.

Maps

darla, This site is good for old maps. But i have found that by going to maps of north america, or civil war maps, they come with the date the map was made and you can zoom in to the location you need. I get a lot of info on an area. Roads, rivers and creeks and towns. Than i use topozone to see what it looks like to day. on the first page, page down and on the left you will see (search by key word) this is alot easer to use. Type in say, civil war texas or the state, county or city. Also look on the net for county maps of texas or try civil war maps of texas. Check the library gengealogical department, a lot of times they have old city and county maps and look at there news paper collection on the civil war the local papers would give details on the troops camping, battles. Most libraries keep a large collection on microfilm. County court-houses should have old land and plot maps. boomer

drop me an email you are right down the street from me. Grew up in Conroe live just north of there and have alot of family still in the Willis and Conroe area. Been looking the same as you and have a few places in neighboring counties that I am fixing to try with some local MD's. Maybe we could put our heads together. I am not new to treasure hunting only to this site, been doing several different types of hunting for about 15 years.Like to have you along if you would like to join in....

Check out your County history books for sites where recruiting for Civil war soldiers were held. they were at churches I have found.
and that opens up for even more finds.
