I promise yours had a tail. Those are stamped brass and that tail area would be one of the weak spots. Yours would have been gilted in gold but it can come off being in the ground, just like the buttons do.

While I agree this is solved, one must remember that the USAF used the same hat/cap insignia on the Officers service cap. The only difference being the color, Army gold in color, Air Force silver in color.

What you are seeing as a loop is the threaded post bent over.

Is this civil war era? The only reason i ask is because of the 13 stars .

Civil War would have been 33 stars. ;-)

The U.S. Great Seal still has 13 stars. Has had since it was adopted in 1782.
