Civil War Name Stamp?

Found this brass piece in a Civil War camp in the SC Lowcountry. Has the name CAPERS on it. The regiment camped there had a quartermaster with the last name Capers so maybe it was his stamp? Anyways here it is. Any help is much appreciated!

Well that is what it is. A capers marker. Maybe for a press or for marking the spice.

one way to know for sure.... you'll need to do a lot of archival research and track down any paperwork from that unit that you can. If you find a matching stamp on any period piece you'll know
