Kids just got metal detectors, we live in Virginia with civil war trenches near Richmond on our property, found an elongated S shaped iron piece in the first 15 minutes of searching. Seems to match up to the photos of the cocking/hammer mechanism from percussioin era rifles....now, any electrolysis set up suggestions??? Are these things rare to find??

Welcome. Sounds like some prime hunting land you got! Some pictures would be real helpful. :)

Need to get a digital camera, I guess. Yes, although we are not in a heavy battle area, Dalhgren's raid went down our road and he "visited" the farms. This afternoon I am going across the street to a house built in the late 1700s, and if anything pops up I will let you know.

Sounds like you may hit the mother load! Good luck. ;)

yes photo would help , are try scanning it, tnks,rj

Welcome to the forum, jjj. It sounds like Dad needs a detector! It sounds like you're in a perfect spot for some interesting relics and some coins.
