Sunday afternoon I had a small window to get a little swing time in. Of course, no permissions so a new found local park filled the void. This particular park is absolutely littered with coins, It’s not old, (1970’s) but specifically around the basketball court, 4 and 5 good targets can be heard with every swing.

Believe it or not, it was a challenge (at first) in trying to figure out which signal to dig and which one to leave for another day when every signal had potential.

So, here are my finds for 3 hours of play. 69 coins with 32 of them being a nickel denomination or higher. Keep in mind, I could have dug way more than 69 coins in 3 hours but I changed things up after the first hour and did more cherry picking.

My first hour was spent digging mostly pennies until I noticed the accuracy of my TID numbers. By concentrating on numbers of 85 or higher on my Impact in VLX2 mode set at 14 kHz I was able to predict with a very high degree of confidence, what the target was. If it was a dime signal (85) it was indeed a dime. The last two hours gave me 90 percent of my dimes and quarters.

As time goes on, I will be digging the lower TID signals and will be curious to see how many signals turn out to be dimes instead of the pennies I thought they were while cherry picking. I know that some signals come in lower by having other coins as well as trash in the hole so time will tell.

Anyhow, if you have any better ideas on how to approach this clad infested park, please let me know.

HH everyone!

Dig all the clad... It adds up

This is exactly why I do not dig parks. Hurts the hobby as you can not hide every hole. Digging tools in parks has all but outlawed the hobby here. I glean and probe. I find much more as I can hunt faster and cover more ground. But my hat is off to you for all that hard work. It takes me more time to drive to a local park than the time I spend hunting it. some days I am skunked, but not many.

That's nuts! Congrats on all of those coins!

I agree that unskilled people with digging tools can make a mess of things. I always keep this in mind whether its a park or permission or even a plowed field. Because this park has so many good signals i will be working it slow and spread out and won't be digging holes close to each other. Lucky for me, most of the coins are not deep. For the targets 2 inches or less, no plug is needed. A slit in the sod and quick insertion of the pinpointer gives the exact location and then its on to the next target. Anyone with any real experience with metal detecting can tell about how deep a target is and can pinpoint with precision.
I am sorry to hear your area is all but closed off to detectorists. My town is the same way.

Super day. Congrats

Well you had some fun there, and have some gas money to prove it.

Nice work. I detect parks often and rarely dig a plug as most targets in the littered parks are less than a couple inches. I do the slit/probe method as well. Never know I was there and lots of trash taken out each trip.

Good hunting, Ammoman!! I use the same technique in parks........cherry pick and leave some for another day.......give the ground a chance to heal.

I agree there are slob detectorists out there, but I have found it rare. Its been less than a handful of times I have seen chickenpox fields.
Mostly, its the resentment of people for treasure hunters. Why are people like that?
Its also an easy, low hanging target for pandering politicians, so they can pretend to be "doing something"
Not the least, all the "professionals" who simply don't want you poaching on what they consider their property.
Detectorists have almost nil impact on historical objects. They focus almost entirely on extremely common objects, such as coins, and jewelry. Its the same with relic hunters, only different objects. Buttons, bullets etc.
So, we need a strong, aggressive advocate, to work for us as a group. And not apologetic. MD'ers do no harm, they enhance the property by hauling out trash and removing glass and sharp metal. They often obtain permission by offering to groom the property for free, and I daresay, much of the money found goes back into the local community. Not to mention the amount generated by detector purchases, bags, batteries, shovels, headphones, coin tumblers, knee pads, etc.
We have a bad press, and although there are groups against us, there are few who are with us.
We deserve more.

This one guy here does 13" plugs in parks. I know who it is.....oh well. For me, I do not do parks, except two at beaches and still fill the sand holes carefully. A lot of other folks do not.

OMG thats insane! Maybe he was a ground hog in a previous life?

Excellent haul.
You reminded me of how easy it is to load up on clad in populated cities. You seem very comfortable with your machine.
Congratulations

I highly recommend newer parks to any experienced detectorist who wants to learn a new machine fast. Most newer parks are loaded with clad and give up a wide variety of signals to learn from.

I'll add that in my area, geese, squirrels, moles, groundhogs, etc... all do more damage to the terrain than any good md'er would. Those darn critters never remember to fill their holes and I often find myself fixing their damage because I fear some unknowing fool will point the finger may way.

HA!! Funny u say that, I once left a park because the moles had absolutely DESTROYED a 100 sq. ft. area, leaving literally hundreds of fresh, brown mounds. As Obsessive says, I'm willing to fix a few mole mounds to keep Mr/Mrs Busybody from looking my way. I would've needed a steam roller to fix those...Ddf

Way to hang in there!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny
