What kind of "dirt" are we talking about here? Is it dirt or oxidation? There is no easy cure for oxidation, but if a coin is valuable and has not been field cleaned, I advocate a coin conservation service like NCS.

If it is "junk silver," some folks use baking soda for oxidation and polish it away.
