Amy thoughts on how to clean the rust and heavy dirt on this button. Tried toothpick but really not working. This is for my collection and not going to sell so not worried about cleaning it. Thanks

That's a tough one Man.

Look's like dirt/sand fused to the face? & IMO De_ rusting the back will destroy the face IMO.

IMO Tooth pick as little as possible, & Maybe leave the back alone.

I got a tin-back A button from my Club & it's Back don't look that bad but the Front has Some gluing going on.

I like yours better. & You know where it came from.

likely best to leave it as is. After 150+ years it amazes me to see some buttons come out in Great Condition , Usually they are the GS types in my case but Ill take them.

Looking/Staring Again ...Man That's a Tough one IMO.
There has to be a way of loosening those Mt's of Sand/Dirt off the face,.( Great closeup pic, if I mat say so Myself) ,
without breaking through the thin Brass face.

Maybe I soak it in EV Olive Oil.. for a day at a time (checking on it)??
