Cliff Hanging

You definitely need the right equipment, know how to use it and have a buddy. I have static rappelling/ascending gear, even a 2 man rope for an emergency. I have used it for canyoning and fishing but not prospecting yet. Went down a well a few weeks ago but couldnt get it pumped out enough to use my sand scoop for coins.

I knew some guys that did that on the EF San Gabriel where the old timers hydraliced. Pulled some gold out of the crevases

Yeah, I think that would be a blast. I saw some spots on the river that may have never been touched. Way up on the sides of the gorges. But then again, maybe some tough sob's got to them years ago.

Still makes you want climb up there and look around.

Maybe a rappelling class? Would a basic climbing course get you ready for that?

Rope Work in the Back Country

Yes I have rappelled over some cliffs in the Northern Sierras though I was only prospecting for the bottom of the canyon and the stream that was in it or, it was the beauty of the 200' water fall that I was after. It was worth it as well! The pools were filled with native rainbow trout many 18" to 24" in length and the place is just so beautiful! There is gold in the general area but I did not look for any In There. Takes muscles, good gear that happens to be heavy and who knows what could be found!?

The three pictures here are not the 200' box canyon I was talking about above but it is another place where I would love to go over the edge to "check out a few things"! Most people never see the 500' water fall pictured in the two pictures, look over my left shoulder and then the telephoto shot of the 500 footer. The pool in the first picture is what stirs my curriosity.
Needless to say this is rough country and it takes a lot of work to get in there however, the rewards are obvious in its beauty but I sure would love to detect the area all around that lovely pool as well as take a well deserved swim in it with my goggles on of course, most likely about a three minute swim as it will be cold!..................63bkpkr

Wow, that pool does look inviting. I love to free climb, but I have a healthy enough fear in me that I never tackle anything too dangerous. With the right gear and some help - I think I'd give it a shot. That is some good looking rock.

You found a gem.

sidvail,
Yes it is inviting! The anchors would need to be into the cracks in the rock as if I recall correctly any 'safe tree' is some distance from the edge I'm looking down. Over to the right but out of the picture its possible one could get down using a rope as an aid but that's what I remember and I've learned not to trust my memory. The gear package for the rappel down would weigh in around 40 pounds and that would put my regular pack weight up to 125 lbs and I'm not up to that at the moment.
A beautiful rugged place though!.............63bkpkr

Someplace up your way there is a store I enjoy looking in on every now and then - Guns, Fishing & Other Stuff
