and I agree 100% Not that I have anywhere near the experience as Mackaydon. You just don't need it for this one.

Reproduction coins like this were not required to have the word COPY on it before the hobby protection act of 1973.....so it may have been made prior to 73, although there have been many unscrupulous folks who have and still do, produce them without the required COPY stamp.

Definitely a reproduction, I remember some of my metal detectors coming with a reproduction cob like that. That must have given you a heart attack finding it!

doesn't look like a 'copy' of anything. By that I mean that the design just looks like a bunch of squiggly stuff meant to appear much like a hammered spanish cob. From what I can see from the picture, it looks like a cast pot metal fantasy 'pirate coin'

I found it metal detecting at the beach by the water line about 6 inches down, about the size of a quarter, its light in weight not as heavy as a quarter, there is some letters on the back of the coin, I can make out an A and an 8 and either an H or M I think, then the cross is on the other side.

You may be surprised at the number of these found on beaches. There are people who love tossing these into our paths just so we can have a little excitement.....at least for a moment.
