Does that model have shielding? I know most PI machine have but most VLF don't that I have worked on....

Do the cut and splice, try to repair the shielding the best you can. Yes you will need it.

If you can solder the 5 pin DIN plug, I say go for it. I'll bet the shielding is mylar film. If it is, strip back the jacket and wrap some bare wire around the shield and solder it to the ground pin on the DIN. Some heat shrink tubing will come in handy, it'll give a little more strength to your fix.

Thanks for the info. I opened up the outer jacket and found the green and white wires are shielded together and the red and black wires are shielded together and then there is a bare ground wire outside of the shielded pairs. I'm thinking I'm gonna try and do a step soldering of all the wires so I don't have all my solder joints in one spot. Heat shrink each wire individually and wrap the pairs of wires that are shielded together with aluminum foil. Solder the ground wire, then heat shrink the entire glob. Won't be pretty but I'm hoping will work.

Sounds like a solid plan. Good luck.
