I was having a conversation with a guy who works in the corporate division of a headphone company. He told me the reason some of their headphone models don't have the coiled lead wire is because it's a patented item that belong to an old lady in NY ( I believe he said NY). So it adds a certain extra cost to the phones. she in turn gets her cut.
Don't know how true it is but it would explain why a some of these headphones that are available come with the thin loose lead wire.
....just for what it's worth.
