Coin Cleaning

I found an old 1943 nickel but it's black. I was wondering how or if I should clean it

And aluminum jelly might work pretty well too. I'm going to investigate using it on heavily oxidized silver coins the next time I find a blackened one. Last one I found like that I used baking soda and polished the oxidation off (1840 Seated Dime). I was not impressed with the results.

I agree w/ BuckleBoy + Aluminum Jelly will also remove
the redish color cause by Iron Oxide too, but get ready
todo some scrubbing w/ one of those mini brass brushes.

You can also clean of those kinds of crud w/ CLR mix
@ 2:1 ratio CLR : Warm water, items will have tobe
turned over todo the other sides.

i use (eagle one never dull wadding polish). it works wonders.the soft tissue will not leave the smallest scratch. i used it on a nasty black sacagewea dollar and now it looks like a proof coin. it has a tendency to (over clean) wheats though.as they also come out looking like proof coins..i found the polish at my local automotive store.

For what its worth,on silver I use cream of tartar sauce powder,and a little water,gently q-tip it around the face and immediate results!!!!No scratches either

I clean my bronze coins under microscope with sharp dentist tool,silver coins can be rinse in vinegar or lemon acid,also gold coins....
