Diggervet Jr and I wanted to share some pictures of some earthworks and the relics we found. Nothing too spectacular but you never know what you'll pull out of the ground around here. I hope these pictures give you an idea of the state of some of the trenches and fortifications that are all around us here in central Va. The best find was the union staff officers cuff button found by DV jr. The shell frags are from various types of ordinance and the bullets are also of a wide variety. I always like finding bullets in wood and there was no shortage at this sight. We brought home the trunk of a downed tree with five or six bullets in it! Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Now that's how to find bullets. That's some good stuff there..

That is just so cool...all of it... I love the bullets in the tree too, that would look so neat framed in a shadowbox.. You are so very lucky to be able to dig there.. No civil war battles here where I live in Jersey..so you are very lucky and someday I will get to dig up a bullet too from the civil war..

thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed seeing it all.

Hey DV, the lead and iron was thick in the air during that battle. Super Finds from a very historic site!!!

That's a LOT of lead!!!!!

Looks like you had an excellent trek into the woods. Keep looking, and you should find some other relics or buttons.

:icon_cyclops_ani: Great Googly Moogly! That is a truly amazing amount of bullets you have there. I especially like the bullets lodged in wood.

Digger...Man those pictures bring back a lot of good memories. I lived on St Rt 156 just out of Fair Oaks about a mile and a half from the grapevine bridge. This was in the late 60's and early 70's. Garry Williams (Hanover Brass) got me started and we used the old Metrotech 220 detector.

I'm not sure some of the guys believe me when I told them it was nothing to recover 100 bullets a day. Three or four US buckles and eagle plates. And countless other Civil War items.

I went back to visit this pass fall and could not believe all the development that has occurred in the Cold Harbor area. I'm sure glad that some of the battle field and entrenchments remain.

Thanks for sharing. TomB

Congratz on all of what you found. It is pretty wild to look at your pictures and to think that men were there once trying to kill each other. I am from Virginia but live up in New York state now. Use to find all types of stuff in my home town of Winchester, Virginia.

That is a mighty fine day of hunting. I am about to get permission to hunt 500 acres on the Cold Harbor battlefield in the next couple of days......With a corderoy road on the property.

Awesome , Sentinel !

I was on a corduroy about 3-4 years ago,
that was a different kind of travel now.

Good luck with your permission and hunts.
Keep us in the loop.

Well, my wifes best friend's parents own the property....and they have only ever let one person hunt it and that was in the 1970s so......maybe we will get together and hunt. I hunt all over the peninsula, and around Richmond, and to the south near Petersburg......Looks like a fine spot you have and I really am looking forward to getting up there and hunting the property. I dont know what part of Cold Harbor that you are hunting i.e. Northern end, SOuthern end etc.....>BUt the place that I am talking about is on the Southern end of the Cold Harbor battlefield.

Make no mistake,
I didn't mean to mislead.
I don't hunt cold harbor.

My folks live in Mt. Jackson and my Brother lives in Maure town.
Between the two it isn't too hard to find one of the old corduroys.
But I know how hard it is to get permission out where you are.

It has been three years since I have been to VA, am planning a trip in OCT.
The calendar reflects from Oct 1 to Nov 1 - trip to VA.
Maybe we can get together. There are others I would like to contact while I am there as well.
