💥1909-S VDB💥 Today's finds

So I went back to a church (1880-90's) I have hit about five or six times and came up with absolutely nothing every time not even much clad so today I went out after my girlfriend got home for a few hours before dark and found this! Looking it up now not quite sure if this is a key date or just the 1909-s. Any way cool old wheaty!

This was my only find there it's definitely tough pickings there!

Ok so I am sure some people will disagree with my opinion on this but here's how I feel: I have not done research into all of the top grading and restoration services for coins but I did look into PCGS and to me their policies and fees are pretty confusing and some things raise some red flags to me. First of all the only address I could find for the company was a PO Box in Newport Beach, CA. I would probably feel more comfortable if I had a physical brick-and-mortar address of the company so I actually know where my coins are.
Another thing is a lack of payment methods this company will except they require a credit card or active line of credit.
On top of that you have to be a member before you use any services which there is a fee for that as well, overall in my opinion the company makes it very difficult for something that should be pretty easy especially now days when everything is so simplified and efficient. I rather have my coins not graded then go through that whole process to tell you the truth.

Are all grading services like this or similar?

It is very annoying to send coins out, unfortunately, most of them are also like this. Many coin collectors won't buy a rare coin unless slabbed one of the three best third party grading services, PCGS and NGC being the best, and ANACS is also ok. PCGS is my favorite, it has been around since the 1980's, and I have a large collection of Morgan dollars dollar slabbed by PCGS. 99% of the very rare coins in the huge auctions such as, Stack's Bowers, are all slabbed and graded by PCGS and NGC. I personally haven't sent a coin out, because none of the coins in my collection are worth over around $100, and grading costs around $30 per coin (I am also not a member). Good luck if you decided to get it graded, it is also perfectly fine keeping it raw though. Many times I like having a raw coin to look at that isn't behind plastic.

This coin reached $10,000,000 dollars at auction recently, graded by PCGS, imaging finding this metal detecting!

I think I remember that ANACS is much easier and cheaper. I almost sent my favorite 1803 cent that I found to them, they are very good at copper. Many people have recommended them. Maybe look into them too.

If I found that it would be like winning the lottery! I will definitely look into that other company but I plan on not selling the coin so I don't think it would be that big of a deal to me. Unless I find a $10,000,000 coin! Then it's going to auction! That one is even plugged that's incredible!

Lol!! I know right? I almost fainted finding a worn half real, image that beautiful huge silver dollar? I agree with you, if you aren't planning on selling stuff why spend money to slab it? I also never plan on selling any of my finds, I loaned a few relics to a museum which the public can now enjoy, but I still own them. Congrats again on that amazing find, and good luck, I know there has to be a 1794 dollar somewhere!

On the "Coin Talk" forum is a guy that goes by the name of BadThad that is an expert on preserving copper coins. I would talk to him because coins from the ground develop verdigris which can deteriorate copper coins. He's developed a product called Verdi-Care (I think) for preservation of copper coins. He seems to be really helpful and I'm sure he would give you all the assistance you need.

PCGS is the best and their graded coins sell for more money than NGC or ANACS That is the simple truth. They are the master bible.
Getting a coin graded as an individual is a major PITA. They are designed for coin houses that send in 30 - 50 coins at a time. You can buddy up to a coin dealer and have yours included in his lot. A lot of times they are short coins to send in for the volume discount and will slab your coin for free just to get to their volume.

AS far as the PLUGGED dollar goes, These were plugged by the mint to fix the weight so it is not the same as a plugged coin to fix a hole that someone put in it to wear around their neck!
Back then a dollar coin had a dollars worth of silver, if it was light no-one would accept it.

My friend owns a gold jewelry manufacturing plant. And has a few million in inventory at any given time. He uses a PO Box and his place looks like a run down factory. You would never guess what and how beautiful the inside of the place is.

Thanks for the info! I figured with the PO Box deal that was for security but if you're a big company like that you better get some security guards that's my opinion and I won't give them business unless it's free like you said through a coin dealer. I'm not that trusting I understand it's a major company but mistakes happen! Thanks for the input. HH

Congrats man! I've been metal detecting for a few years mainly at beaches and parks and thought I was doing good when I finally found my first couple wheat pennies! And you just found THE key date of the whole Lincoln wheat cent series! This has my banner vote! Awesome luck dude!
