I have seen a few of these brass artifacts being found at colonial sites, and late 1700 to early 1800s sites. A few of them have showed up here on Treasurenet and trying to find an answer, here is the one I found along with a picture of another friends finds with same brass piece? HELP!!!! Thanks

In the past they have been ID'ed as suspender clips (sewn on variety) or garter clips, but none of the threads I've looked at yet have 100% proof.

Modern heavy-duty hooks and eyes carry the same basic shape as your piece. (Example: Hooks and Eyes )

Just my theory...Colonial pieces would have been sewed on (the three sets of four holes on your piece) and ornate. Hooks of that sturdiness would have been used for cloak clasps or heavy coat fasteners.

1903 patent cloak hook.
