Sniffy gave me a ring since he was down in my area he left work early due to high winds so why not go detecting.
we headed up to a cellar hole that I haven't spent much time at.
snow was a few inches deep but targets were poppin.
He did well in the coin dept.no coppers for me but by the well at 5 inches out popped this nice little gold ring.there are no markings inside what so ever.
any jewelry experts out there that can give me a time period based on the design I would appreciate it.All Jesse's coins were colonial. I also got a neat fish comb some flat buttons, one being a tombac & one zuoave (ball button) a busted colonial shoe buckle frame & chape and a .69 caliber musket ball.this ring has to have some age to it.
Oh! and the mutilated ox knob is made out of some white metal.never dug one in this composition.all mine have been brass :dontknow:

Nice find. Question...does old gold like that have markings? The reason I ask is because I found an old ring at a site last year and it appears to be gold, but I figured it wasn't since there was no markings. ???

Very nice ring. Congrats.

i'm not that knowledgable on when stamping gold for purity went into effect.but i have seen old rings with hallmarks from England and Europe etc.
Just not sure when it became customary in the states :dontknow:

FYI
The stamping of jewelry made from precious metals is regulated in the USA by the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act of 1906 (also known as the Jewelers' Liability Act). When a maker chooses to mark such an item with a purity mark (either in pictorial of numerical form), the maker is responsible for the accuracy of the alloy (with some tolerance). The 1906 act did however not require the maker to put a responsibility mark, or maker's mark, on the jewel. It was not until 1961 that a responsibility mark became mandatory on jewelry with purity marks. This mark can be in the form of a trademark or the family name of the maker in full. A maker is not required to stamp a purity mark on the articles, but when he or she does the act provides for the legislation.

Amazing ring! My vote is for early 1800's. Were it English it likely would have hallmarks? Seems like maybe a local craftsman created this, would be interesting to find out if any local gold smiths in ye old olden days.

thanks for that info Mike! under the loop i can see casting marks inside the band.did they make 14KT in the early 1800's Jim?

very productive hunt! I love the "just found" pics of the ring

no clue. just a guess based on location and design. if it's unmarked gold then a good bet it's 19th century or older, right? design looks like some of the simple and bold designs of early 19th century. just a guess bro, it don't mean nuthin.

As a colonial hunter, we know what a rare treat gold is.

Even if it is a bit newer, it is still an amazing find!

Congrats!

Nice finds, How do you manage to dig in frozen ground?, we have even less snow than you and the ground is hard as rock.

I love that ring. Must be an old one. Nice find! :headbang:

My guess is early 1800's......Really hard to date this ring, as there just is nothing definitive in it's style. I deal in antique jewelry, and my "gut feeling" is early 1800's.

Congrat's on your cellar hole Gold Dave :icon_thumright: Fish comb is too cool!!!!

Have gotten gold all over - but not at a cellarhole yet - WTG :icon_thumright:

Agreed, the 'shield' shape bezel top has been used for hundreds of years & still used today, peoples 'Initials' were often incised on the top to personalise it. Pretty sure we can rule out 1700s, & I agree it's probably circa 1825 :icon_thumright: However, mine is a gut feeling as well & maybe its a little later. Whatever date it is in the 19th C it a great century to get GOLD in :hello2:

Really nice finds!!
That ring is a huge bonus!!

You and Sniffy both did well yesterday nut.
Congrats to you on the old gold ring, you know as well as I do, it's rare to dig gold on old sites like you hunt.
Sorry you didn't find any coppers, sounds like sniffy is a copper magnet with his new geiger counter :laughing9:.
