Sniffy gave me a ring since he was down in my area he left work early due to high winds so why not go detecting.
we headed up to a cellar hole that I haven't spent much time at.
snow was a few inches deep but targets were poppin.
He did well in the coin dept.no coppers for me but by the well at 5 inches out popped this nice little gold ring.there are no markings inside what so ever.
any jewelry experts out there that can give me a time period based on the design I would appreciate it.All Jesse's coins were colonial. I also got a neat fish comb some flat buttons, one being a tombac & one zuoave (ball button) a busted colonial shoe buckle frame & chape and a .69 caliber musket ball.this ring has to have some age to it.
Oh! and the mutilated ox knob is made out of some white metal.never dug one in this composition.all mine have been brass :dontknow:

My guess is early 1800's......Really hard to date this ring, as there just is nothing definitive in it's style. I deal in antique jewelry, and my "gut feeling" is early 1800's.

Agreed, the 'shield' shape bezel top has been used for hundreds of years & still used today, peoples 'Initials' were often incised on the top to personalise it. Pretty sure we can rule out 1700s, & I agree it's probably circa 1825 :icon_thumright: However, mine is a gut feeling as well & maybe its a little later. Whatever date it is in the 19th C it a great century to get GOLD in :hello2:
thanks for this info Cru! I'd love to think that this is from thta time period and hearing all this feedback makes me feel better about its age.thank you everyone!

Now that is something you dont find everyday ! Awesome finds !

Nice finds, How do you manage to dig in frozen ground?, we have even less snow than you and the ground is hard as rock.

when i dig in frozen or hard ground i use a small hatchet to chop around the target to loosen the soil.
works great, just a little more time consuming.
definitely for the die hards.
way to go on your find great finds. :icon_thumright:

Congrats on the gold ring, any old gold ring found in the woods would make my heart rate increase, so nice to see one being found at a site like that.

Great looking ring. Congratulations on the finds.

Looks like you and Sniffy had a great hunt. That ring is a work or art and it always amazes me how well that gold holds up over all of the years.

Very nice colonial digs! That ring is a killer find

we have had a mild winter and in the woods hasn't froze.last few years we hunted all winter long, sometimes ya punch through the 3-4 inches of frost and it's like butter underneath :laughing7:

The ring is a rare find for sure

She must have been a Princess ::)

I wonder sometimes if the women who wore the old jewelry i find were beautiful :laughing7:

That fish comb is superb also..

You guys are trooping it and being rewarded
