well upon request from a few good people i decided to post a colonial copper coin spill i found two saturdays ago . this was found at a cellar site that been detected many time by others and was my second time there .

anyway after a several hours at another spot my buddy and i decided to hit one more site before calling it quits for the day . i hinted at this place as it had alot of area and we were only there one other time and it was very close by.

pocketspillsite.jpg

it was a big center chimney colonial and we found a few buttons last time , well we split up and i was detecting basically alone for about an hour and a half. i started working an area slowly when i got a great high coin sounding target at around 6 inches i was really thinking a nice silver piece and out popped this

i was very excited to see these , but by their dark color i just knew there was morein the hole

three more coppers proved me right , wow now i was really floored .
unable to see what they were because of the thick corrosion but they were large coins and i just assumed they were matron head type large cents. later i found out i was wrong and learned that they were a King George III copper , a New Jersey copper and 4 fugio pennies . a real colonial coin spill and my largest multiple coppers in one hole .

heres what they looked like when they got home

the next job was trying to i.d. the varieties and then tackling the job of cleaning them. well after almost two weeks they are nearly there .

heres a some pictures of them individually

if any one can tell the varieties as i'm a little confused on two of the fugios it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks all for the nice comments on the other forums .

the front of this looks like a Newman 15 because of the die crack to the lower right of sundial base. but the revers i'm unsure about and the pitting doesn't help , any ideas ???

Yes, so it has to be one of these. 15-H 15-K - 15-V - 15-Y. Now you need to find pictures of the reverse for 15-K - 15-V - 15-Y.

Here is the 15-H.

I think we can rule out 15-H? Doesn't the W in "WE" dip too low on the pic I posted to be your coin? That would narrow it to the other three.

15-V looks like a contender.

Here's the 15-Y. If you look at the E in One it's on quite a slant, where as the 15-V posted above it seems to be fairly straight. The E on your coin appears to also slant? That would narrow it to two. This one, and would have to compare the 15-K which I have yet to see. Your picture is just a little too small for me to tell.

ok, and here's the 15k. It also has the straight lined E, so that means if your E slants it's probably 15-Y.

The E is tough to make out, but there is no question 15-H is out with the E being directly over the other E. Down to three.

15-Y. Compare the position of the A in ARE, to the A in STATES, it appears to be the only match. So with that die crack on the obverse being the same, (meaning it was solved) the matching A position means it can only be 15-Y.

Here it is for anyone who thinks different. I don't try to ID Fugios much... well never. :laughing7:

Here's the range of the similar for this one. I see a strong case for Newman 13-X - Very Common... but I wouldn't bet my detector just yet.

Newman 13-X - Very Common
Newman 14-O
Newman 14-X

Newman 15-V

Newman 17-S (17-S.1 in Kessler)
Newman 17-T (Rumored to exist in a New York collection (ST))
Newman 17-WW (17-W.2 in Kessler)

Newman 18-X
Newman 19-M
Newman 19-SS (19-S.2 in Kessler)

Will off the list as i go.

Well I learned one thing, Fugios make my head hurt. ;D I am getting closer to betting my detector that it is 13-x though. I've been looking at 4 certain points which all match on your coin, but do not on any of the others I can find pictures of.

awesome find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang:

Still waiting to see this up top. I have come back to this post at least 20 times and am still amazed. Definate Banner. Got my vote.

It sure is and that would be a much better result. It's also why I would never say I'm 100% sure until I see them all. Damn those two are close.

I think you do have 13-N. :headbang:

Look at how the bottom of the T in STATES is almost completely flush with the O in ONE on the 13-X, where as your coin and 13-N the bottom of the T looks higher and does not completely face the O. Sometimes images can fool you but I'd swear there's a difference.

Fingers will be crossed, just seen the 13-N is a rarity 7! Your coin is actually pretty good condition for dug so it would no doubt have some value.

This has absolutely nothing to do with our discussion on the IDs but have a look. :tongue3:
