Got out to the old colonial spot today where I've found 21 flat buttons, 3 shoe buckle fragments, a rare confederate artillery fuse, a 1798 8 reale, and a 1776 2 reale. Today I found my first colonial copper coin. It is a KGIII half penny. I can't see a date. If anyone can see a date on it, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

1731 isn't possible due to the fact that george II ruled then. I see 1771

Thanks. I believe on a 1731 the head would be the other way.

Congrats you've been doing great at that site! First colonial copper is awesome. Just a tip...keep a detailed journal of all your hunts with location, date, duration of hunt, finds, and pics of good finds. It's fun to have the great story with your great finds and to see what sites produced what

Nice find! Thanks for sharing...

I see 177-..... Have you tried a toothpick on the date area? With the detail on the obverse, that date really should be jumping out of the reverse.

Looks like 1772. (1 not visible)

That's a great old find! Not being able to date a coin is frustrating, but the process of figuring it out can be fun. Sometimes I take a pic of a coin and then play with the colour/clarity/contrast in order to improve details. I fooled around with your pic, and it looks to me like it might be 1771. At any rate, nice coin!

That's what I thought too. Thanks

Look at your pic, what you consider to be the 2nd 7 is too rounded, it's probably a 2. The date is a bit off center to the left, but not a real surprise being it's a counterfeit. If you look around you can probably find that obverse, and usually the reverse would be the same, which would tell you the date.

It's a counterfeit? So you think it's 1772?

Yes, it is a counterfeit and a common one as I've seen it many times before. I'm going purely by the picture, but from what I see it's 1772. Might be able to track one down to confirm.
