Got out to the old colonial spot today where I've found 21 flat buttons, 3 shoe buckle fragments, a rare confederate artillery fuse, a 1798 8 reale, and a 1776 2 reale. Today I found my first colonial copper coin. It is a KGIII half penny. I can't see a date. If anyone can see a date on it, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

Yes, it is a counterfeit and a common one as I've seen it many times before. I'm going purely by the picture, but from what I see it's 1772. Might be able to track one down to confirm.
Thanks! I didn't know it was a counterfeit. Very interesting. I'll do some research

Can't see any die crack.

Well that doesn't mean much, just an easy way to confirm it was the same obverse. Everything looks pretty close. What about the first G in Georgivs... See the extra metal that makes it look more like an O, can you tell if your coin is like that. It's the little weird differences that will help you decide if it's a match.

Heck, I've never actually seen one of those coins so I don't have a clue even where the date is located on it....LOL Plus being blind as a bat wouldn't help even if I knew where to look. It is however and amazing find! Congratulations.

Hahaha. Thanks!

I think it's a 1771.

I hope it's not counterfeit.

Nice find!

Contemporary copper counterfeits are not a bad thing, as the majority of them are.

"In Massachusetts, the House of Representatives started an investigation of counterfeit coppers on March 27, 1755 stating, "as large quantities of counterfeit half pence, of base metal, had been imported, and, with French and other small copper coin continually increase, a committee are (sic) ordered to report measures to prevent such practices." It appears that by 1760 the majority of coppers sent over from Britain were counterfeits"

I do see that G has more to the letter and it looks like an O.
