I think this is a butt plate from a pistol. It was found along with late 1700s era Spanish coins, tombac buttons and pipe stems whose bore sizes are consistent with late 1700s as well. Do you agree that it looks a lot like the butt plate on the pistol in the picture? Thanks for any suggestions and input.

Looks like a buttcap that was cast but never finished.
Does it have a hole in that nub?

Photo looks more like lead than brass, can you tell what metal it is?? No lead pistol butt caps. It also cannot be a rough casting for one, they were cast exactly to shape and size, just needed polishing. Pistol butt caps are not very thick, so your item is something else.

This is an unfinished buttcap.

Yes, sand cast butt cap, brass patina makes the photo look like lead.

What other stuff are you finding? Are you in an area where there was possibly a gunsmith that was building firearms?

Sure looks like one to me.

Yes, there is a hole in the nub. part has been broken off, not uncommon in the area. It's from a sugarcane field. Lots of times the relics are damaged from plows.

It is brass. Its also not very thick. Part of it has been broken off by a plow, from a sugarcane field.

1700s Spanish half reals, pipe stems, flat buttons, 1790s french marine artillery button, heck my buddy recently dug a George Washington inaugural button, see banner :) This is from a sugarcane field where a tavern was. The piece has damage from a plow.

This is a possibility too. My piece matches this more exactly than the pistol unless it's too small to be on a sword. Do you have the information on what sword that is? and the entire picture?

A bucket lister for me, any brass 1700's gun part in that case. I thought I had a trigger guard once, turned not to be one sadly.

Man I wish I had some spots like that to hunt... I don't know how many more mardi gras dubloons I can dig before I lose it and need professional help :tongue3:

I think the pic is of a British calvary sword but there are many countries with very similar sword pommels.
Most being calvary swords or sabers.
