I went to the bank last Friday to pick up a box of halves. I opened a savings account at this bank last month specifically for the purpose of picking up halves, nothing else. I normally have all cash, but a family loan left me a little short in my "hobby" envelope, so I had to do some creative financing. I had $300 cash, a $150 check I received as a gift, and I was going to take $50 out of savings to make up the difference. Well, I got to chatting with the tellers, and watching the "breaking news" they had running on the TV, and got myself all confused. I accidentally wrote my withdrawal slip for $150, not $50. So, I paid $600 for a $500 box of halves not realizing it and walked out with no receipt, no copy of my withdrawal slip, nothing but my box.

I figured out what I did and went back to the bank yesterday. Mr. Teller, who can't remember me being in there on Friday, suddenly remembers that I only had $200 cash, not $300. I explain that I have an envelope with $600 total and one transaction to keep track of, he has a drawer with thousands of dollars and hundreds of transactions each day. But, it's my word against his because I have no receipt so I'm out $100. Perfect.

Lesson learned: no chatting, don't get distracted, always get a receipt - even if it's cash. If, that is, this hasn't left me too bitter to keep going. I'll decide tomorrow. LOL

Not everyone is cut out for this hobby. Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

Make a formal complaint, in writing, to the bank manager and state that if no action is taken you will forward the complaint to the corporate offices. May help. Don't just take being taken.

Maybe the teller got caught up in the story as well; an honest mistake on both parts..............
What goes around comes around, you'll get some extra silver down the road, either for your $100 mistake or from being generous and loaning a family member some much needed cash.

Well if this is the case, then that teller should have been over at the end of the day on the tally of all transactions.
One time when I went to the bank, the Teller gave me $11 dollars more than what I was supose to get. I didn't count it.
But after I had left she relized her error.
The next time I went back in, she told me what had happened. She showed me the papers from that day and time and check recieved and cash givin. She said that she knew after I left, but then at the end of the day she was $11 short. I had no problem giving her the $11.

So I would see the head person and get to the bottom of it. He could be a dishonest Teller. He has to have records of all transactions from that day also video as the tellers are recorded.

Then also next time make sure you get a reciept.
Just My opinion.

Agree, the teller should have been over and that would have proved you were right. Of course, if the teller allowed you to overpay by $100 he/she probably undercharged someone else so who knows.

The teller is the head teller. He claims his drawer wasn't off, however I know that $100 is floating around that bank somewhere. How can he balance his drawer if the coins didn't come from his drawer - they came from the vault? I don't know - it just seems real shady to me. First of all, he's a bank teller - a head bank teller - he should be able add (of course, so should I but I don't do it for a living). Secondly, he said he didn't "log in" the cash - he only had a record of the check I cashed and the withdrawal. If he didn't log the cash, how does he know it was $200 and not $300. I think he didn't want to get caught making a mistake like that - so he covered it up. Or, maybe I'm just whining because I'm having a crap day and I'm out $100. Probably both.

So ask to see the withdrawl slip that you signed. Your "receipt" afterall is only a machine print out of the original. They keep the original with your signature on it for a reason. So ask to see it. You will be on camera walking out with ONLY a box of halves worth $500 if the teller hands you no cash, and the original bank kept withdrawl slip will have the amount on it. Its $100, banks keep track of everything so fix it.

I usually get distracted when I see silver in the tellers tray and I ask for it. :tongue3: I'd chalk it up to the cost of business, especially if you are getting a lot of boxes. Tellers make mistakes all the time. At least once a month I have to correct a transaction and they are usually in my favor. Sounds like the teller pocketed the $100 but who knows...they might have handed it right back to another customer without knowing.

Great idea. They can do this and straighten it out. I'd do it sooner rather than later. You may not be welcome to CRH there anymore but you'll probably get your c-note back.

typically I dont post here anymore... but I wanna toss this out.....

While you did lose 100$ here is the thing... if you make too much noise... you will be finding a new bank.... and still may not get your $$ back.... esp since this is the head teller... and even if they do not dump you now.. you wont be getting any orders from there......

They borrow the money from the vault to their till... then to you... thats why vault transactions are on their till..... as for surveilance.. they wont check it.. most dont really tape things.. least here.. they only moniter... or use same tapes each day and record over.. I had a bad experience at a bank.. I begged the regional superviser to just look at the tape... and he would see I was right.... no dice... accounts closed.... dont come back they said.... just my opinion.. let it go... chalk it up to experience.. learn a valuable lesson... dont ever repeat it

I really disagree with the "no chatting", because a really good strategy is building your rapport with the bank. Do it some, but not too much, be pleasant, not clingy. But definitely keep your eyes on the money! LOL.

Better luck next time.....

I really don't think that the teller was stealing from you....if he was caught stealing on bank property, he's looking at Fed time. But it does happen.

I appreciate that advice, and it might be good advice to some. I like hearing how others would have handled the situation, there's always something I can learn. However, I'm not at all worried about them "dumping" me. I closed my account at this bank this morning. I quietly went to the manager, told her the story and asked to close my account. The reason I gave was not because I lost the money - and truly that's not the reason even though losing that much does sting. I told her that I was very disappointed in the way the teller handled the problem. His attitude, that he couldn't have possibly made a mistake and it must have been me, that it wasn't important enough to do anything about, and the fact that he didn't even offer to bring it up to his manager for a solution or offer me a true apology...this is the reason I can't do business with this bank anymore. It's about customer service. It's about ethics and values. I'm not going to compromise mine by condoning this kind of behavior or allowing anyone to treat me this way. Whether or not I buy another box of halves ever again - I won't be treated like I don't matter. After much contemplation I realized that what it all came right down to was...it wasn't really about the money. So, I left. There are plenty of other banks.
