Went out today invited my buddy (car91rs) to Columbus New Mexico. Last time we were there we found some military buttons and car91rs found a cool trade token. Today we hit a spot that I had my eye on for a while and it paid off for me at least, sorry buddy. car91rs had a dry spell but that's because he didn't follow my lead, lol. Right off the bat I hit a flat area in the desert that looked promising. I hit a high signal within a few mins and uncovered what looked like a broken aluminum spike used for a tent, so I continued to grid the area and again I get a high solid signal, but this time it was the top part of the spike. I did this for the next 15 min and kept pulling broken spikes. Wow, I finally found a tent site from the early 1900's. Next thing you, I find a button just like the ones I found in Orogrande's Ghost town possible from a miner. So I continue with my grid and get high pitch sound on my machine, this time I uncover an old US Army button and a hand full of shell casings. As I walk away to look for ca91rs, I get that familiar high solid tone that screams at you "SILVER"! So I brush off some of the sand, and wouldn't you know it... A 1916 Barb Dime looking straight at me... Nice! Again I look around for the lost one (car91rs) and again a sweet tone, but this time it's a military button or something. I don't know exactly what it is but it is a first for me. If anyone can help me ID this item it would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the pictures and I apologize for my rambling. I am half baked by the 8hrs in the 103 heat and a little delirious.

Oh, car91rs you got me with that scorpion today, but payback is a (B)! Lol

Texas Yankee - Very nice pictures ! Good finds !! If I'm not mistaken there was a major Army garrison stationed there back in 1916,
to put a stop to Pancho Villas raids in and around Columbus/Deming area. This area is considered "prime" hunting grounds for the
nearly mythical 1916-D "Mercury" dime , since the payroll for these troops would likely have rolled down from Denver . The fact that
you have found the 1916 Barber is a good omen ! Get back out there and get your '16-D Merc.
