I am trying to further my education. Although I have the Nox 800 with the stock and 6" DD coil I am still wondering about the concentric coils. read on forums where some individuals say concentric coil is better at finding deep targets. But do they just mean in an area with little trash or do they mean in trashy areas.

The concentric coil is a cone with the sharp point hitting the deepest targets. But if you have other junk targets in the upper broad area of the cone how does a deeper target in the pointed area of the coin not get masked or affected by the upper junk targets? In my parks most of the junk is in the upper 2-3 inches of soil.

What makes the concentric coils better at identifying deeper targets than a same sized DD coil. It seems that the Nox series uses electronics to unmask deep targets and maybe that is why they are not using concentric coils.

Ok, I may have all of this wrong in my head, so that is why I am asking the question.

thanks

My personal opinion (and experience) is that the modern DD coils are a better design than the concentrics. They go just about as deep and have a better sweep pattern and coverage than a concentric. As you mentioned, picture sweeping a site with a cone tip vs a broom. I think the masking is less with the DD coils too in most cases. Now in areas with no trash, and deep gold nuggets, I'd probably want the concentric, or at least the option. Since there are no concentric coils for the Equinox yet, it's rather a moot point, but, an interesting question. I'd like to hear from the tech nerds on this one.

I agree with Cuda's assessment, the other advantage of a DD coil is that you will get slightly more depth than a concentric in mineralized soil. There is a crossover point in level of mineralization at which the DD outperforms the Concentric. It is nice to have the option to run a concentric under certain circumstances, but the DD would be my everyday coil. I have no idea if ML has a concentric coil in the works for Equinox or even if the Equinox is set up to handle a concentric coil (some detectors such as the Teknetics T2 cannot even accept a concentric coil). Regardless, it would be a situational coil that would rarely make it onto my machine, so I am not going to really be upset if ML or a third party never gets around to offering one as an accessory. A smaller, solid form elliptical DD coil, however, would be welcome.

This thread is why I like it here. I have been out of the sport as a relatively new guy for about 2 years. But coming here I can read technical and technique questions that make me think about not only the machine, but coil capabilities and design. Gives me more to ponder when I get my machine, thanks folks!!

Thanks guys. It is nice to confirm what you think you have learned. Would live to have a 5x8" DD coil for my 800. On my AT Pro the 5x8" coil really made hunting a joy since I hunted mostly parks and old home sites and not open fields.
