Found this a few years ago in a Confederate Civil War cavalry camp. My brother found one in that same camp also and I found another in a different Confederate camp that was an infantry camp. Anyway, been wondering what these are for years. I don't know if any have been found in Union camps as I mostly hunt in Confederate ones. It's made of brass and would like to have a photo of it in use also if someone knows what they were used for. Thanks.

It looks suspiciously like a mis-shaped thumb loop off of a candlestick.

Could be that, I'll have to look around. Forgot to mention the one my brother found is slightly smaller, but exactly the same, so whatever these are they come in different sizes.
