Found in Virginia today at a Confederate position. It is about 1" tall and is stamped brass. The US Engineer's insignia is different. Ideas?

Except for the little tear on the left top facing you, it is intact.

Does it say anything at the bottom where the red box is, and is the part at the top circled in red a hole where maybe a chain would ha attached?
What does the back look like?

The top is just a tear. No hole. There is nothing at the bottom.

I would wager its European made and used by Confederate engineers. It's a guess however. It would have had a pin back, now gone but some corrosion on the spot it was welded on.

It looks like an artistic impression of Dover castle. IMO, the design is a bit 'involved' for it to be a military piece.

As it is stamped, the back is a mirror image of the front.

Looks close the an engineer’s insignia and you found it at a confederate position, so IMO that is too coincidental. I would say that it is a confederate engineer’s insignia. Awesome find!

I haven't been able to find a CS engineer button with that design on it in any of my references. Can someone post a picture of one?

I was looking also on the net for castles in Europe and found there were way too many of them! Found 3' from a Virginia Button.

Machkin, I might have to googleearth it. A lot of the European castles look a lot alike. Of course the French and Brits supplied the Confederate side during the CW.

it wouldn't be totally unheard of to find a foreign accoutrement (French or British). This just looked French to me for some reason.

Don't you think that some people are jumping to conclusions here? It is not a US engineer insignia, in fact not even vaguely like one, therefore it is obviously a Confederate insignia? It may be one for all I know but I have seen no evidence offered.

I can just now see the French guys from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" hanging out the windows. I did a google earth on that one building in France, and if it is the same, the pin is somewhat fictionalized. It is a pin, no doubt about it, about the size of an average kepi letter. I don't think it was made in the US. I went through Tice's button book last night and there are no matches anywhere for it. Nothing even close. There were no world's fairs back then, the house burned in 1864. Not feminine at all, so it leaves hat attachment as the likely suspect. Apparently its not "regulation" Confederate, but just like the masonic emblems, or some of the "Texas" stars that are found.
