I believe (but could be wrong) that troops from texas and mississippi liked stars. I saw a picture somewhere of soldiers from mississippi with stars on their hats.

Yes... and of course, finding this in Texas... which is a HUGE star state... may have some meaning to it.

OK. Just got a message back from a friend of mine on your find.

"Hello Jeff,
That is a Texas Martingale. I found one years ago and it was shown in a civil War Relic Book."

Albert, I think it maybe has something to do with the Texas war for independence from Mexico. That star looks a lot like the Texas star you see displayed everywhere around the state. Or, perhaps the Texas Rangers? Monty

Wow Im impressed thanks ya'll, A 200.00 whatsit that maybe civil war but very likly 1860's (or so).
And a actuall picture of one Thats very cool thanks stoney and DCMATT.
My buddy said he has one also and was covinced it was civil war. He said it was rare and possibly worth 300.00 or so

I would say that it likely IS a "rare" find...the survival rate of these couldn't be that great since they're thin brass. Similar to a Company Letter in terms of how they fare underground. Nice Find!

I think this one is SOLVED :)
