It looks like a period button, but no way to tell anything else from its condition.

Where was it found? An area known to have CW soldier activity? Confederate soldiers often had plain buttons or flat buttons sewn onto their uniforms especially at the end of the war when resupply of ANY military material was difficult to come by. That button looks to be CW era, civilian with some sort of design, common enough. Keep digging & see if you turn up anything else like bullets or perhaps a state seal button
