Confirmed.. Civil War Trash Pit Bottles

OK any 60s or 70s large car with a trunk is good. The wider the car the longer the rods open the trunk under the space between the rear window and the trunk opening there are 2 spring steel rods with a bend at each end attached to the trunk lid hinges. do yourself a favor and prop up the lid first, if you are real strong you can flex them out I have done it this way but it is real tough. from then on I used a cordless sawsall! please use extreme caution! they are under twisting tension! sometimes when a car is crushed they are already loose so try that first. in any case this can be dangerous work and don't forget they are the only thong holding up the lid!

Thank you very much for the detailed info. I think I'd better not attempt to get them myself.

I was thinking an oak dowel rod with a brass screw in the end?? The trash pit is in the woods so the soil is pretty loamy the first two feet then you hit clay. The bottles were at the clay level and above, with the "top" bottle only being 10" in the ground or so. My thought still, is to sift, since I found three buttons, a couple bullets and the clay pipe. The ting was, with the bottles being right at the base of this massive tree.. I can't help but wonder if there are more under it!! Hmmm.. I wonder if my sister needs any firewood! I can leave the hole open as long as I want.. it is off in the woods and she doesn't care. One of the funny things about this is.. it is part of a "Golf Community".. there is a house a couple hundred feet away that is.. no lie.. about 15,000 Sq Ft.. who know how many millions that was!! I wonder if they will let me detect their yard! I have not been back for a couple of weeks... might have to head out there this weekend!! I'll post anything else I find on this thread...

Sift! Yes, that's the way to find the smaller stuff. Sift! Can't wait to see more pix of stuff. As for the big tree that might be preventing you from finding more bottles, if the bottles could be like the ones you've already found - chop that sucker down!!! You can always plant a couple more of the same species to make up for it. Good luck, and don't get hurt!

this is seriously kick A$$. i wonder why they were dumped there, a camp site , but that sure is alot of snuff for a few days. maybe there is a old homesite around, prob long gone now. hey RELIC LOVER, on the spring steel, is there a chance it could unwind violently if i try to get it myself??? so a caddy would be a good canidate for the rod? also can you see the rod while its in the trunk???

You can see it. it is straight except for the ends, at the most it is twisted a half turn plus the weight of the lid is on it. there are two of them and different makes and models have longer straight sections in them, old plymouths are good, your caddie sounds promising.

the twisted ends, will they straighten being spring steel???

no you cut them off, there not a spiral you would think of as a spring just a 90 bend or a j bend the springiness is from slightly twisting the straight part.

wow those are some fantastic finds i can't wait to see what else you'll find hh any iron pontil sodas?
